Baillie Gifford is a privately owned investment management partnership established over 100 years ago. The firm is based in Edinburgh and wholly owned by our current partners, all of whom work full time within the firm. As stewards of Baillie Gifford’s long term vision, our partners are free to manage the firm without the distraction of the short term demands that external shareholders often bring to the management of investment firms.
Our structure as an unlimited liability partnership is extremely rare among large investment businesses and allows us to focus solely on what we do well, managing our clients’ assets. We are unashamedly active, not passive investors, and this is all we have ever done. We have been investing in global equities for over a century and take the same long term approach to investment as we do to the management of our own business. Our original client Scottish Mortgage PLC is still our client today.
Our investment universe is global. Our approach to portfolio construction is stock driven and expressly growth oriented. We invest for the long term and pay no attention to short term performance – we are investors, not speculators.
The world is complex. We believe that the best way to generate long-term returns for our clients is to focus on the deceptively simple task of identifying and investing in those companies which have the potential to grow at a faster rate, on a more sustainable basis, than their peers.
We conduct rigorous qualitative research to establish whether prospective investments have the competitive, financial and strategic advantage to deliver on that potential.
We like to share. Investment ideas are discussed and debated across our investment teams, the vast majority of whom have spent their entire working lives at Baillie Gifford. We are always looking for that novel insight, offbeat observation or penetrating challenge to help round out the investment case and enhance our collective knowledge.
There are no enduring right answers in investment, so we never stop asking questions. Coping and interpreting uncertainty is key to our approach. Embracing and acknowledging volatility is key to generating long term sustainable returns.
