Steve Liebmann - The Next Chapter

  • I’m Steve Liebmann, almost retired broadcast journalist and still a news junkie. I was very fortunate that Foxtel came along after that long period of twenty-two years anchoring the Nine Networks’ Today program, so I eased into retirement over a period of two, three, four years.

From the moment I left, I’ve never regretted it but I’m still a news addict, and every morning I’ll grab the papers and my iPad and I’ll head down to the local cafe for a cup of coffee and news consumption.

I enjoy reading the newspaper, going from page one through to the back sporting pages. You’ve got to remain mentally alert. In my case, I like to think I’m still tapped into the world.

Planning is critical when you think about retirement and I’m not just talking about money and things like superannuation. You’ve got to think about what you’re going to do with your time because with a little bit of luck, you’re going to have a lot on your hands and you don’t want to waste it.

You never know what’s going to happen. When I was doing the Today program, I’d get up at three o’clock in the morning, I’d be at the network by three-thirty, you’d have a set plan and all of a sudden that plan goes out the window because a big story has broken. And you’ve got to be ready to accommodate the changes that are going to occur in retirement life.

I mean retirement gives you a great deal of freedom and flexibility. Make the most of it, because it only gets better.

A former Australian television anchor and radio broadcaster, Steve Liebmann is best known for co-hosting the Today news and current affairs show on the Nine Network. Now in retirement, Steve starts each day at his local cafe reading multiple newspapers and articles in both print and on his iPad. He treasures his morning routine and the ability to spend time doing what he loves. This is the way Steve intends to spend every morning of his retirement and it’s a lifestyle he has planned for, financially.
