Sofia Sakalis is a soccer star on the rise.
Starting at age five, like other girls her age, she had to ply her trade in her junior years in boys’ teams. That baptism of fire led Sofia to be chosen by none other than Tim Cahill to represent Australia at the Disney International Cup in Florida where her team won gold. Since then, she’s carried with her the words of Cahill, “Work hard, stay humble."
And she has.
At 13, she debuted in the top Senior Women's League in Victoria. She then went on to represent Victoria last year in the U15 and U17 championships, again winning gold in an all-star team. From there, she was chosen for the U17 Junior Matilda's team for the AFC qualifiers in Vietnam where she was the top goal scorer.
All this has culminated in a full-time training position at 14 with two-time championship winner Melbourne City FC Women's.
All these achievements are stepping stones to competing for Australia at a World Cup and the Olympics. Sofia is one to watch.
