All the behind the scenes work that goes into helping young athletes should be acknowledged, which is why this year we have introduced the Colonial First State Sports Booster. An initiative to highlight the local volunteers behind the clubs that make the young athletes of Australia.
We are pleased to announce the Sports Booster for 2018 is Deb Farrell - Secretary, Coach and Treasurer from the Budgies Indigenous Netball Club.
Deb has been involved in the Budgies for the last 12 years and is truly inspirational. From organising competitions, running back-office admin, to managing teams and coaching - all on top of her job as a PE teacher; Deb makes many sacrifices to ensure young Indigenous women follow their dreams of playing elite sport at state, national and international levels.
She is most proud of seeing the girls build skills and confidence on and off the court. Also seeing the lifetime friendships they gain through the Budgies Indigenous Netball Club. Deb has helped over 50 girls gain scholarships to private schools across Queensland to provide them with a better future, by encouraging them to stay at school.
Deb hopes to see the Budgies continue to grow and provide more opportunities through education and the club- with the hope they will play for Australia one day. It’s volunteers like Deb who make sport what it is for our future athletes.

Thank you to everyone who nominated their Sports Booster. It’s great to see so many people having such a positive impact on their local sporting communities.
