Scott Tully, our General Manager Investments gives an overview of how we can all navigate these uncertain times in this short 2.5 minute video. He offers tips for managing your super to help ride out the volatile markets.

  • Hi. I'm Scott Tully, General Manager of Investments for Colonial First State.

We understand that you may be feeling concerned about how your finances will be affected by the CoronaVirus, its impacts on world economies and financial markets. The current situation is understandably stressful not only on your finances but also to the health and well being of you and your loved ones.

As fund members ourselves, we understand the importance of investing. That's why we're working hard to make sure you have the support you need during this uncertain time. You can expect that as developments continue to unfold we will continue to closely monitor markets, sharing regular market updates and communicating closely with our network of experienced investment managers. We aim to identify the risks and opportunities of investing your money.

When financial markets experience disruptions, growth investments such as shares typically experience more volatility than more conservative investments such as fixed-interest and cash. If you are an older member, you can benefit from having higher exposure to investments such as fixed-interest and cash, as they generally carry less risk. If you are a younger member, you may have a larger allocation to shares. It is important to remember that you have a typically longer investment horizon to retirement, meaning you have more time to ride out short term volatility in markets to generate investment returns over the long term.

While it is understandable to feel concerned, please remember that markets often experience volatility and that investing can require a long term view. History shows us that markets do eventually recover from such disruptions. We saw that through the global financial crisis with markets recovering strongly after a period of volatility. In the meantime, we encourage you to keep your long term goals top of mind as we navigate changing market conditions. And remember, our team is here to help with insights, market commentary and other resources available on our website to help keep you up to date.

    Thank you.
